ميلادى متولد شد. پدر و مادر او با خاندان اشکانى خويشاوندى داشتند. نام پدر مانى فَتَکْ بود و نام مادرش نُوشيتْ يا پُوسيتْ يا مريم و از خانواده کمسرکان بود. مانى بى شک ايرانى بوده است . ولادت او در بابل دليل بيگانه بودن او نيست ، زيرا که در آن روزگار منطقه بابل و پيرامون آن جزء شاهنشاهى ساسانى بود. برخى تصور کرده اند که نام مانى سريانى است ، ولى اين قطعى نيست . احتمال دارد که مانگ به معنى ماه باشد؛
